Outreach: Bearing One Another’s Burden

Since the early days of the Old Testament, God has spoken of his special love for the poor and oppressed, asking followers to share with the needy and champion justice for all. At First Christian Church in Henderson, we take this commandment very seriously and provide support and encouragement for members to do just that. Outreach to the poor and defense for the oppressed has played a central role in the larger Christian Church/Disciples of Christ movement since its founding.

Contributions from FCC Henderson assured that the new Jefferson Elementary School had needed playground equipment. The church continues to be alert to find other ways to assist the school. Deacons provide funding for Jefferson’s Backpack program, which provides healthy snacks for children in need. Our Christian Women’s Fellowship (CWF) organizes congregation-wide collections of personal items for Christian Community Outreach. Members of the church are also asked to join CWF one day a week when they volunteer at Christian Community Outreach’s food bank.

Small groups within the church sponsor outreach activities that give members an opportunity to serve through their faith. One group shows up (rain or shine) to deliver commodities to residents in assisted living. Some groups adopt needy families for the holidays and provide dinners, clothing, toys and special gifts. Others visit shut-ins and during the height of COVID took poinsettias to the church’s senior members. Christian Women’s Fellowship and Christian Men’s Fellowship have fundraisers each year that allow them to give to local non-profits within our community. Throughout the year, FCC receives special donations that go to our denomination’s Week of Compassion and Disciples Home Mission. Both of these programs were there immediately after Western Kentucky’s tornado in 2021 and Eastern Kentucky’s flood in 2022

The church also supports and encourages individual members who identify their own special way of serving. First Christian Church members work with local charities such as Habitat for Humanity, the Boys and Girls Club, Handy Blues Festival and other community organizations to provide needed community outreach. At FCC we strive to encourage our members to participate in outreach as they are led by God. We would invite you to join us in working toward wholeness in a fragmented world.

As part of the one body of Christ, we welcome all to the Lord’s Table as God has welcomed us.

We are a Table people–transformed by its grace, living in its light, and sent in service to others.
